beginning of the 2021 NFL season, there were five teams given 100-1 odds or
longer to win Super Bowl LVI. Four of them - Houston, Detroit, Jacksonville,
and the New York Jets - have the first four picks in the 2022 draft.

Cincinnati, listed at 125-1 to win this year’s Lombardi Trophy, will play for
it on Sunday, February 13. The Bengals epitomize the underdog in 2021 and will
assume the role once again when they take on the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams
in an attempt to win the Bengals’ franchise its first Super Bowl.

Bettors did
well tracking the right underdogs this NFL
Playoffs season. For the regular season, underdogs went
138-131-3 ATS. Cincinnati was one of the best dogs to back all season long.
The Bengals
were dogs in 11 of their 20 games (including the postseason). Cincinnati went
8-3 ATS in those games. They are currently on a streak of seven straight
covers. They were underdogs in five of those seven games. Cincy won four of
those games outright.
Super
Bowl Dogs
Not
surprisingly, the Bengals are a 4.5-point underdog at top bookmakers
to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI. Since 2007, underdogs of at least three points
are 8-1 ATS. Even more interesting is that seven of those nine underdogs won
outright, including last year’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Super Bowl
underdogs of at least 3.5 points are 6-0 ATS and 5-1 straight up in that same
time span. If you go back to 2001, underdogs of at least three points are 12-3
ATS. The bottom line is that there is typically value in Super
Bowl underdogs.
Cincy &
Joe Burrow When Betting Super Bowl LVI
The Bengals
are 7-0 ATS when they have played as an underdog of at least three points. They
went 6-1 straight up those games too. Their quarterback, Joe Burrow, thrives in
the role of underdog.
In his
short career, Burrow is 11-2 ATS when Cincinnati has been an underdog of at
least three points. The Bengals won seven of those games outright.
If you go
back to his college days, Burrow is 7-0 ATS in postseason games including 3-0
ATS this season. In his college career, Burrow went 4-0 ATS in conference
championship and bowl games.
Biggest
Upset Since…
In 1999,
the St. Louis Rams were a 150-1 longshot to win the Super Bowl. The Greatest
Show on Turf, led by the “American Underdog” QB Kurt Warner, would go on to
become the biggest preseason NFL longshot to ever win a Super Bowl title.
Over the
last 40 years, no team 100-1 or longer has ever reached a Super Bowl. The 2001
New England Patriots were 60-1 to win and did. Four teams - Atlanta, San Diego,
and Carolina twice - were listed between 60-1 and 80-1, made the Super Bowl,
but lost.

This is
just the fourth time in the past 20 seasons that the NFC team is favored to win
the Super Bowl. The last two AFC teams to be underdogs - Denver in 2016 and
Baltimore in 2013 - both won outright.
The past
three Super Bowls have all gone Under the posted game total. The Super Bowl MVP
favorite has won the award just three times in the past ten Super Bowls.
