Tampa Bay
wants to repay the Rangers for an early season embarrassment when Texas beat
the Rays in three of four games. It was in April at home in Tampa that the Rays
dropped three straight to the Rangers to drop to 5-8 after 13 games.
The Rays
have been quite a different team since then. Tampa Bay leads the AL East and
currently has a two-game lead over second-place Boston. They will travel to
Texas to face a Rangers team that has most recently lost nine straight.

Tampa Bay
is the hottest team in baseball right now. Over the course of their last 20
games, they have lost just three times. Two of the losses were by a single run;
the other was by two and two defeats came at the hands of the Yankees on the
road.
In those 20
games, the Rays put together an 11-game winning streak that included series
sweeps of the Mets, Orioles, and Blue Jays. It’s why they have been favorites
most of the year when looking back on MLB odds.
Tampa Bay
has done it with a strong balance of offense, defense, and pitching. The Rays
are fourth in the majors in runs per game scoring 4.97. The pitching staff has
a collective ERA of 3.42, which is seventh-best in MLB. The Rays have five
pitchers with at least four wins and all have winning records so far this
season.
On the
Mound - Rays - Glasnow
Glasnow, of
course, is one of them. He is 4-2 with a very respectable 2.69 ERA, and that is
after giving up eight earned runs - three against the Yankees and five versus
the Blue Jays - in his last three starts. In the game versus the Jays, TB were
a -153 favorite at the best
sportsbook for MLB.
But,
sandwiched in between the Yankees and Blue Jays outings was a masterful
performance against Kansas City. Glasnow pitched eight innings, gave up three
hits, no runs, and he struck out 11. It was his third double-digit strikeout
performance in his last five starts.
Behind
Glasnow on Sunday will be a Tampa Bay defense that is very good. In fact, the
Rays have committed the fewest errors per game of any team in the majors.
Glasnow
will pitch against a Rangers lineup that collectively hits .228. That is 25th
in MLB. The Rangers lack of live bats leaves them just 20th in run production
averaging 4.00 runs per game. The pitching staff isn’t anything special either
with a collective ERA of 4.55.

On the
Mound - Rangers - Dunning
Speaking of
the Rangers pitching, Texas will start right-hander Dane Dunning on Sunday.
Dunning is 2-4 with a 4.67 ERA. In his last two starts, Dunning has given up
nine earned runs in 8.2 innings. Seven of those runs came in a loss to the
Angels on May 26.
The Rays
will be favored on Sunday. They are -128 favorites in the series opener on
Friday. The value is on the run line where a Tampa Bay cover is priced at +125
on Friday. Look for something similar on Sunday as the Rays get payback.
